They have yet to achieve needed traction there.

Amp Energy Traction (Amp Grape)

Ok it was big news when Amp announced new drinks. Not just new flavors but new drinks! I’m glad to get my hand on one of these new Amp drinks. Let’s check it out.

Packaging: Regular Amp has never really impressed me as far as the can even though I like green. They have updated the design though and it looks much better on all their drink. The Amp Traction can is one of the best from them by far. It comes in the 16oz can like all the others but it is a nice dark purple and black can. It looks really cool with the black at the top kind of running down the purple towards the bottom which is black. The Amp logo is in silver and white and it reads “Amp energy Traction” in bold white and silver font. The name and logo jump out at you from the purple and black. Below the name is “Sustain”, “Maltodextrin”, and “D-Ribose” in white with “Charge of grape energy supplement” below that.  They throw in a Mountain Dew logo towards the bottom as well. On the side is the Amp logo and name again along with a little paragraph about Amp traction and it sustained energy. I’m going to give them a grade of B+ for this can. The color scheme makes this look like a mean energy drink. Kind of ominous really and you know you want to try it.

Slogans” Amp Energy Traction. More Power to you” seems to be the slogan on the can. Not bad really. Nothing really great but I think it works. I will give them a grade of B- for slogan. I think with this awesome can design they should of come up with a more intense slogan.

Taste ect:  Once the can is opened I am immediately hit whit the scent of grape soda. I like grape soda. I pour it in a cup and it looks like grape soda. So far so good. I take a drink and yes it is grape soda but not a good one. Something is just amiss. Maybe it is the energy ingredients. It is not overly sweet nor overly carbonated. Did they just add grape flavor to regular AMP? I’m not sure but I was glad when this drink was finished. I am going to give them a C- for taste. I just did not enjoy it.

Kick/Ingredients:  Amp drinks always have a nice ingredients list but for some reason just don’t do it for me. Will traction be different? 160mg of Caffeine, 248mg Guarana, 296mg Taurine, 34mg Ginseng, and some B vitamins. Then you have the ingredients that make this one the “Sustained” energy Amp. 292mg maltodextrin and 144mg D-Ribose. There is 220 calories and 59 grams of sugar. I got a nice little boost but it only lasted a few hours and then I went down like the Hindenburg. I just can’t understand why a 16 0z drink with these ingredients provides something you would get from your typical 8.4 oz energy drink. I was really disappointed since I did not sustain much energy. I give Amp Traction a grade of D for kick. For a drink this size it does not do what it should.

Web presence:  Sure Amp has a nice official page at ampenergy.com but you want find any mention of this new Amp Traction or any of the other new Amp drinks. Still you will find it is a nice flash page with a little product info on the 3 original Amp drinks(and I mean minimal info). There are some videos clips of Amp commercials but a lot of the other links like “store” and “Action Sports” are all listed as coming soon. They have a facebook and a lot of hits on Google. I will have to give them a grade of C- on web presence though. For a major Energy Drink I expect more info on the new drinks, complete product info, and no “coming soon” links. I could also do with a little less Dale Jr. Nothing wrong with Nascar but let’s not alienate non Nascar fans.

I had high hopes for Amp Energy Traction. I was let down though. I think they are spending too much time trying to capture Nascar fans and soda drinkers. They need to work on their formulation and their website. There is something not clicking in the formulation. They should look at the Monster energy or Rockstar websites. That is the kind of website a major player should have. I am just guessing that they think Nascar fans don’t surf the net.
