Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better

Muscle Milk Refuel Shot. Tropix flavor

Ok so there are major players in the energy drink and the energy shot markets and we all know who they are. Muscle Milk is one of the major players in the protein drink market. They have decided to test the waters some in the shot market now by offering the first protein energy shot. Let’s check it out.

Packaging: They skip the typical 2 oz shot bottle and go with a clear 3 oz shot bottle with a metal twist off lid. This shot is wrapped very nicely in a cool lime green label. Over all the fonts used look pretty good. The label is well laid out and not overly busy on the front. The put the caffeine content front and center as well as the big seller that is the Muscle Milk name. My only gripe is that the flavor font is a bit too small.  Grade B

Slogan: “Protein for Muscle, Caffeine for Metabolic Boost” is on the back of the shot and it’s pretty good. Not a catchy slogan but one that lays out the shots benefits very well. Grade B

Taste: Twisting off the cap I pour out a cloudy brown liquid. Surprisingly the scent is a nice sweet coconut. It smells like a dessert! I was expecting more of a citrus based on the label color. Taking a sip it has a really great toasted coconut flavor with just a hint of lime and pineapple. I can taste no bitterness or protein flavors in there or any bad aftertaste. I will tell you this is one great tasting energy shot. There are very few shots I would drink for the taste alone but this is one of them. Grade A

Kick/Ingredients: Well based on the level of caffeine in this shot I was expecting the kick to be average at best. I drank the shot and the energy hit me surprisingly fast. I got a much better than expected buzz going. I used this shot prior to a run and it performed really will in this aspect. I had plenty of energy to get through my run but not so much that I was over doing it. After my run I seemed to still be energized and I recovered pretty quickly as well. It has been shown that a small amount of Protein combined with carbs is good for endurance sports and I think this shot works in that way. Drinking my typical sport drink combined with this shot is a good endurance combo. I got a good solid 4 hours of jitter free energy from this shot. Ingredients include. 100 mg caffeine, Taurine, Glucuronolactone, Green tea, L Valine, L-Isoleucine, L-Leucine, a good dose of B vitamins, and alpha l polylactate. You get this with 35 calories, 4 grams of carbs, 3 grams of sugars, and 5 grams of protein. I give it a grade of B- for kick/ingredients.

Web Presence: The website at cytosport.com is a pretty good site. You will find good product and ingredients info as well as news, goals, athletes, features, and more. If you are into fitness this is a pretty helpful site. They also have a Facebook as well as a twitter.  Grade B+ for web presence

Recap:

Ok so for some you might say not enough protein, for others not enough caffeine. For me I think it was a good combo. It was not over the top and jittery in kick which a lot of people might appreciate. It still provided a pretty good kick though that is on par with your average energy shot. Then they added in some unique and interesting ingredients to kick it up a notch. All the while they did not sacrifice taste at all. In fact this is a really great tasting shot. If you are headed out to the gym or for some other athletic endeavor I think you need to check this shot out. I think Cytomax has done a very good job with this unique product.
