Sweet Sweet Evil.
Freek Skitzo energy drink
Today I reached out for a can of Freek Skitzo energy drink. I was feeling a little tired after lunch and getting up at 4am. I was not sure what flavor this drink would be but judging by the purple pull tab and also some purple graphics on the can I was guessing grape.
Packaging: Freek Skitzo come in a 16 oz black can with a grey monster head that has purple eyes. The Word Freek is spelled out in big purple letters on the front with the work Skitzo in white lettering below. At the top of the can the words evil energy are in white lettering as well. I believe this is one of the older cans from before the company was forced to redesign by Hansen Natural Corporation who said it was to similar to their Monster drink. Read about the lawsuit here . The newer design has a more skull like character and the lettering is a little different. Overall I love the can design. It’s dark and it’s different. It would probably appeal to those goth kids who stay up late doing whatever goth kids do. The newer can is a little less dark. I give Freek Skitzo an A for packaging.
Slogans: I love the slogans on ED cans and Freek have a good one. The whole Evil energy theme is unique. On the back of the can you get this.
“You now hold the most evil energy known to man. Double the danger of mere mortal energy drinks. This bad brew borders on insane! Our mad scientists know no limits! Throw down this ferocious fuel and unchain your inner Freek.
Get your Freek on!”
Well that is a little long winded but I like the get your freek on bit. It’s catchy. I’ll give the slogan a grade B.
Taste: Well as for taste it is supposed to be a grape /fruit punch inspired drink. When I pour it I get the scent of grape and the color is a light purple. I definitely taste the grape up front and then the fruit punch at the back. This is a really sweet drink and it has a bit of sourness you can feel at the back of your jaws. I detected no medicinal flavor at all. It has a medium carbonation and is easy to drink. If you like grape this is the drink for you. I really enjoyed the flavor and would probably drink it again. Flavor gets a B-
Kick/Ingredients: It has 170 mg of caffeine per 16oz can along with 2032 mg of Taurine, 200 mg of inositol, 8mg of Guarana , and 8 mg of ginseng. This all gives you a nice kick and kept me going for quite a bit. It has 220 calories per can so there is some energy there as well. The drink is made with carbonated water, HFC , citric acid, Sucralose, maltodextrin, and several other ingredients. Nothing unusual. I give the a kick a grade of B-
Web presence: Freek energy has a nicely designed website at Freek.com .
The site is professional and has a lot of content. The nutritional information is all there as well as clothing for sale, and photos (hell I think that’s Pauly Shore? That is freeky!). There is also a page for each Freek flavor. This though is not a good thing though. They dress up the cans in dorky clothing and hats along with a cute little back-story. It really takes away from the whole evil energy bit. Not very edgy at all. Looks like something that might interest a 12 yr old but I don’t think that is their market so I don’t get it. There is contact information as well. Overall a really well laid out design but I’d ditch the character bit. Grade B- design is nice but the dorky characters bring it down.
