Waking the Demon
Full Throttle Blue Agave VS Blue Demon

So just last year Full Throttle decided to change their entire line up. Gone were Fury and sugar free Fury which were some of my favorites. The other flavor got new names and can designs. They did not stop there though and changed the actual formulas. I was lucky to have an original Blue Demon in my fridge and though it would be cool to compare it to the new version which is called just Blue Agave.
Packaging:
- Blue Demon was a more edgy design. It had the cool font and the flames on it. It was aggressive like extreme sports. I liked it a lot and I give it a grade of B+
- Blue Agave is a sleeker and more sophisticated label. The fonts used are pretty nice and the design is simple and easy on the eyes with out a lot of clutter. Seems to me maybe they are going for a more mature market. Still it is not a bad looking design and I give it a grade of B
Slogan:
- Blue Demon had the slogan “Go Full Throttle or go home” that was for all the original FT drinks. I liked it a lot and give it a grade of A-
- Blue Agave has “Feel The Energy at Work” up on their website along with an image of a guy welding. I think for their target more mature consumer this is a great slogan as well. Many people use energy drinks at work. Grade A-
Taste: This should be interesting. The new drinks are supposed to taste better with the “No Choke Formula”
- Blue Demon comes out of the can a really pretty blue color. It has a nice Agave scent. I take a sip of it and it is really tasty. It’s hard to describe agave flavor but this is a really good one. It’s not too sweet with a medium carbonation and I can’t really taste much bitterness. Grade B for taste
- Blue Agave Comes out the same exact color with the same sweet agave scent. I take a sip and this one has a more pronounced agave flavor to it. It is sweeter and the level of carbonation is a notch higher making it more soda like. I have to say this one actually taste better. It is just more flavorful with no after taste or bitterness. Grade B+
Kick/Ingredients: So it actually tastes better but will it suffer in the kick department. Gone is the Taurine , Ginseng, and Carnatine. The new ones have only Caffeine, D Ribose, and B vitamins.
- Blue Demon. I drank this can down and it delivered a nice kick in the typical 15 minutes. The level of kick was mid to low with no jitters. I got a good solid buzz that lasted me for a solid 4 hours with a slight crash at the end. It was on par with what you expect from most 16 oz energy drinks. This drink was powered by per can 144 mg caffeine, 1210 mg taurine 180 mg; ginseng 28 mg carnitine: and 14 mg guarana. It has 240 calories, 58 grams of carbs, and 58 grams of sugars. The level of B vitamins was in the 40% range with B12 only being 20 % dv. It was sweetened with HFC. Grade C
- Blue Agave. I drank this flavor the next day around the same time. In 15 minutes I had a nice buzz going. There were some slight jitters and I felt I just had more energy than I was expecting. This is a proper buzz and one that got me going and doing. The buzz was solid and it was a notch or 2 above the original. The buzz came in at a solid 4 hours with less of a crash I think. This new formula is powered by per can 200 mg caffeine and 200 mg D-Ribose. The level of B vitamins is much higher coming in at the 200% dv level for most. It has 240 calories, 58 grams of carbs, and 58 grams of sugars. Grade B-
Web Presence: The site at drinkfullthrottle.com is much improved since last time I checked it out. There seems to be a lot of content and the navigation is much more user friendly. You will find plenty of NHRA info, tons of multimedia stuff to check out, events, promos, and ingredients info for each drink. Good job guys. Grade B

Ok so I think the new can design is not as good but otherwise it seems Full Throttle made the right move. They removed some energy ingredients but increased the caffeine content. The flavor is more robust and just plain taste better. While this battle was hard fought by both and went the distance, in the end Blue Agave won a unanimous decision. I say you should check out this new Full Throttle and I think you will be happy with the results.
