Rockstar energy shot Tropical Punch flavor
With the energy shot segment getting bigger and bigger it was only a mater of time before some of the big boys took notice. NOS while not one of the really big boys was first with their Powershot. Now Rockstar is out of the gate with its energy shots just ahead of Monster. Rockstar has 2 flavors and I will be reviewing the Tropical punch flavor first.
Packaging: Rockstar passes on the typical white plastic 2 oz shot bottle in favor of their own glossy black 2.5 oz bottle. The bottle is about 5 inches tall and looks more like some of the 4 oz shot bottles(headshot megashot) I have seen before. It has a red screw on plastic lid and a wide mouth out the top which makes it easy to slam. The plastic used for the bottle is a very sharp glossy black and has a black paper label on it. Right at the very top it reads “200 mg Caffeine” in a white font. Below that is the name “Rockstar” in red font and “Energy Shot” in a gold font. The O in shot has been replaced with a little crosshair like in a scope on a gun. In the middle of the label is the Rockstar star logo in red with the 2 r’s in it. It also reads “Zero sugar Zero Carbs” in white font next to the star. The name Rockstar Energy shot is also in big letters up the side of the label. On the back are supplement facts and “Caution Powerful” warning printed as well. I give them a B for packaging. It is typical Rockstar in design, the black bottle and label are very sharp, and the caffeine amount highlighted right on the front is a great idea. I think maybe the size hinders the portability some but overall this is very nice packaging
Slogan: None on the bottle but on their site you have “Hours and hours of power” and “Grab it, shoot it, Rock on” The first slogan just does not fit with the Rockstar image I think but the second on is pretty good. Grade B for slogan
Taste: I twist of the cap and get a nice fruit punch smell. I poor the shot in a cup and it comes out a pale pink color with no carbonation. I expected it to be a darker red so the pink surprised me. I take a sip and at first it is pure punch flavor but then it really has more of a cherry citrus flavor once the flavor settles in. It has a nice sharp citric acid bite at the finish which nicely covers most of the energy ingredient bitterness. Really no aftertaste to speak of except the artificial sweetener taste. Over all it is pretty tasty. I give them a grade of B+ for taste. Nice tasting shot. I think maybe that is why they went with the 2.5 oz size. It gives them more room for flavoring.
Kick/Ingredients: I drank the shot in a few sips and waited. Then waited some more. It took about 15 or 20 minutes to really hit me. I was worried for a while that it was not going to work! Once it hit I had a nice little buzz of energy with no jitters. The energy lasted me a solid 5 hours and there was no crash. This was not a super potent buzz but was above average and pretty smooth. The energy ingredients are 200 mg of caffeine, 1000 mg Taurine, 50 mg Guarana seed extrac, 50 mg L-Carnitine, 50mg inositol, 50 mg of ginseng, 40 mg of milk thistle extract, and a good dose of B vitamins. You get all this with just 10 calories and no sugar or carbs. I give them a grade of B for kick/ingredients
Web Presence: On the bottle is the web address rockstarenergyshot.com which takes you to the page on the regular Rockstar website for the shots. There is good info on the Rockstar shots there and overall as usual Rockstar has a top shelf website. The site has tons and tons of content about rockstar and the people and events they sponsor as well as podcast, video clips , photos, a store. All of it is up-to-date and the layout is pure Rockstar. Really one of the Best energy drinks websites out there. There are even Rockstar websites for a total of 7 countries you can visit. Grade A+ for web presence.
Recap:
Rockstar did not halfass it when they came into the shot market. They have a potent shot that taste great. It comes in a nice package that will appeal to a lot of energy drink consumers. If you see one you need to try it. I think as long as it is competitively priced with other shot it is worth your while. Lets not forget that the Milk thistle extract included is good for the liver as well so that is a plus if you plan to party like a Rock star!
