Strange Brew
Sport Energy Mango Cream

So I’m cruising through my local dollar tree and I spot this new drink in the cooler. I really never have high hopes for energy drinks I find at dollar tree. Still for only a buck it is hard to go wrong. I spy the flavor is Mango Cream. Whoa! That flavor tweaked my interest. I love mango flavored drinks. I grabbed on and headed to the checkout figuring at least it would be interesting.
Packaging: Sport energy drink comes in a 16 oz aluminum can. The can is black at the top and bottom and orange in the middle. The name “Sport” is vertical up the front of the can in a white font with blue edging. There are some green lightning bolt crashing down behind the name and into the black portion of the can bottom that looks kind of like a mountain. At the top you have the flavor “Mango Cream” in an orange font against the black background. Then there is a little graphic with the phrase” With Ginseng” over a blue background. In the main portion there are some faint images of a bike rider and a basketball player. The back has nutrition facts. I will give this can a grade of C for packaging. It has some good points but the overall color scheme seems a little disjointed. Too many different colors with no real flow.
Slogan: I had to get one from the website but it is not too shabby. “Shocking Great Taste” I guess it fits in with the lightning bolt on the can and the site. Does not fit with the name Sport though. Still It might draw you to try the drink. Grade B
Taste: This is what drew me to purchase this drink. I pop the top and pour some in a glass. It comes out an oranges color with a medium level of carbonation. It has a heavy orange scent. I take a sip and I am hit with a nice sweet orange flavor with only a hint of mango. This is followed by a vanilla cream flavor that combines very well. Have you ever had an orange Creamsicle or Dreamsicle? Those are orange Popsicle ice over a filling of ice cream or ice milk. I used to always get these from the ice cream truck when it came through my neighborhood as a kid. If you have had one then this is exactly how this drink tastes and it is great. It is supposed to be Mango but the orange really pushes the mango to the back. As the carbonation wears down it taste even better. The orange and ice cream flavor really meld together and are awesome. There is zero bitterness or aftertaste. I have to give them a grade of A+ for flavor.
Kick/Ingredients: For only a dollar I am expecting only an average boost. I drank the can slowly savoring the awesome flavor. By the time I finished I was fully awake. I will say this buzz was above par and lasted me for a good 3 to 4 hours with little to no crash. I was never jittery but I was very awake and in a great mood. The ingredients list is pretty good for the price I paid. 2000 mg of taurine, 160 mg of Caffeine, Guarana, Ginseng, Glucuronolactone, and a good dose of B vitamins. It is sweetened with Cane sugar and dextrose(no HFC). It has 240 calories and 58 grams of carbs and sugars. I will give them a grade of B for kick. It is easily on par with a Monster or Rockstar 16 oz drink.
Web Presence: They have a site at sportenergy.net. The site is a pretty good flash based site. They stick with a multi sport theme throughout and have plenty of information. There are sections for Products, testimonials, about, try us(order), distribution, and contact. They offer plenty of information about the drinks ingredients(in the about section) and their benefits. Overall I have to say it’s a pretty good website and I will give them a solid B for web presence.
Recap:
I don’t know if these are available at all dollar tree stores but it appears they are distributed pretty much all over the USA. I will tell you to grab one if you see it. This Mango Cream flavor is really one of the best tasting and unique flavors I have had in an energy drink. The kick was above your average 16 oz energy drinks. They have 3 other flavors I am trying to find because if they are a good it is something I don’t want to miss. Really I was shocked by how good of a drink this was.
